Chris Odgen worked with Barnes at UT-Austin so he can recruit Texas kids, which is always a plus. Lew Hill has the pedigree to be winner though. He's been with Lon Kruger since the UNLV days. Don't know much about the other guys.

Robert Kirby is my #1 from what I have read of all of them. I was a kid watching him play for Broncs. Smooth and productive player and he has a whopper of a resume. Lew Hill is my 2nd choice due to his grooming under Lon Krueger at UNLV and now Okla. Taylor sounds impressive as a former player and does have a nice resume. Weir has lots of WAC success and recruiting same type of players as far as that goes anyway. Ultimately Kirby's resume, success, and love (at least fondness) for his UTPA Broncs now the mighty UTRGV Vaqueros will hopefully win out in my lil opinion.

Seems like all of these guys would be a hit. I think vince taylor would be the worst of the bunch and he's still good. Kirby seems to have everything that we're looking for. One of the best recruiters in the country, probably will have more loyalty than all the others, and it looks like he has connections all over the south.
I noticed hill and ogden are already getting paid around 225k. Hipsher at most got 195k. We must have raised the salary to 250-275k in order to get interest from these guys. That or they desperately needed to start off with a head coaching job somewhere.

James you make good points, especially about raising the $$ to drum up more interesting candidates. New coach will need to come in guns a-blazing (like a bold Vaquero) getting assistants, office staff, and hitting the recruiting trail asap. I imagine we should hear announcement by end of this week hopefully. Are existing players released from their scholarships or what? I can't remember how that works...

The current players can transfer but they would still have to sit out a year. Not sure about the ones who were red-shirting this year. I'm guessing they would be able to transfer and play immediately since they already sat the year. With the recruits if they singed a NLI it's up to the school if they want to release them. If they don't then they have to come to the school. If the recruit breaks the NLI then they can't play anywhere that year.

Did the UT-B AND UTPA merger also bring along a much bigger athletic budget? Maybe the $250k salary isn't that big of a deal any longer but I am sure some of these guys would gladly take a step back, get a HC gig for less money, in order to take several steps forward in their careers. For a lot of these guys, they aren't getting any younger. It's now or never if they don't want to be seen as a career assistant.
