Hey, y'all. Distant UTPA/RGV fan here living in Kansas City. My dad is from the Valley and an alumnus of UTPA. We don't get around to going to the Valley much anymore but it's nice to see the Broncs (or in this case the Vaqs) come to Kansas City and play UMKC. Anyways, I was wondering is there any place to buy official UTRGV or even UTPA apparel? I used to check the athletic store websites and the bookstore websites and the stuff was very generic and limited. I don't want to sound vain but, any place somebody could get the real stuff like by Nike or Adidas that I am not checking?
On another note; why aren't you guys rivals with TAMU-CC? Seems like a natural geographical rivalry. I think that would be a cool non-con game for both fan bases to participate in.
Anyways, great blog you got here and here's to hoping for a great upcoming season. Maybe one day my Kansas Jayhawks will schedule you in a non-con. We'll go easy on ya!

Hello, KC! The University Bookstore (956) 665-2252 does have UTPA Broncs Nike gear- Dri-fit and cotton shirts, Nike baseball cap, shorts... I'll try and stop by the store soon and take some pics. You might want to call to see if they can ship the merchandise to you. If not, I'm sure we can figure something out. I live only a couple miles from campus, so getting there is not a problem for me. I have heard that they will have a tent sale at the first UTRGV men's soccer game next month. As for UTRGV Addidas gear, an online store is coming soon. LinkI wish TAMU-CC would join the WAC (I don't want UTRGV to join the Southland). They would make a perfect rival and travel partner. I'm surprised the men's basketball team didn't play them last year. They don't have a football team so it is funny that they are in the Southland Conference. Traveling is a lot less expensive, but their league has been around for awhile without much improvement (except SFA). I think WAC basketball has a bright future with Utah Valley, Grand Canyon, UTRGV, Seattle, and New Mexico St. It can only keep getting better! Oh yeah... your Jayhawks will have their hands full with Shaka Smart's Texas Longhorns! I can't wait! Here are a couple of shirts I've purchased. They also have a grey and a white version of the cotton shirt on the left, and I've seen some long sleeve Dri-fit shirts with UTPA across the chest. The shirt on the right is a Dri-fit.

I wish they would have kept with Nike. I like Nike apparel a lot better, but if the school got a better deal from adidas then more power to them.
I would love for any school to be a rival right now. We play utsa a lot. Pretty much every year. Hopefully we could work with that and make it a rivalry at some point.

Awesome, man. Thanks a lot. Those shirts are basically exactly what I've been looking for. I will have to call the bookstore Monday because when I check online everything is generic block lettering screen printed on a plain t-shirt. I saw that UTRGV's store would be online soon but I guess I've been impatient. And if need be, we will figure something out for sure. I was hoping to get some gear for when UTRGV comes to Kansas City and plays the Roos because last season we didn't sport any orange or green at the game.
Kansas has been with Adidas for awhile and obviously the apparel isn't very flashy and sometimes the alternates are just terrible but at the end of the day, Adidas pays Kansas much better. Not sure what the details of UTRGV's deal are but you're probably right about the deal being better.
I was wondering about how y'all felt about the WAC. Geographically it is certainly diverse. That can be good and bad. Obviously the travel must be expensive and tiresome for the student-athletes but at the same time at least the schools are far enough apart that they aren't stepping on eachother's toes while recruiting. Some UMKC buddies of mine kind of wish they never left The Summit League but UMKC doesn't really have a leg to stand on. Beggars can't be choosers and their basketball program has been very bad for a long time. Many believe there is no excuse either because Kansas City is a high school basketball hotbed but when you have KU 40 minutes west, KState 2 hours west, Mizzou 2 hours east, Wichita State, Iowa State, Nebraska, and being that a ton of D2 schools nearby often outrecruit UMKC; you're stuck with what's leftover. These last 2 years though the fans have been less apathetic because of the homegrown PG Martez Harrison. The fans seem to think HC Kareem Richardson is doing a good job building up the program, relatively speaking.
From what I read; big things are happening down in the Valley nowadays with this new merger to make UTRGV, new Med-school, new arena for the RGV Vipers being built, SpaceX launch pad being built in Boca Chica, etc. I hope this jolts up the recruiting efforts!

I actually like the wac, and I would have to agree with admin that I would rather us NOT be in the southland. It just feels like the southland is a dead end. The wac for some reason doesn't. Yea the travel is probably the longest of any conference but it also helps that we're going to cities like Chicago, Seattle, Phoenix, Kansas city and not Abilene, Conway, Beaumont, Hammond, and Nacogdoches like in the southland lol.

Got a point, James B. Never a bad thing to play hoops in cities like KC, Chicago, PHX, Seattle versus rural Texas, Arkansas or Louisiana. Does the WAC have any kind of tv deal? Sometimes a UMKC game is on a local channel here in KC but it's pretty grainy footage and on some random channel that you can never remember. Basically a public access channel.
The job Marvin Menzies has done recruiting kids to Las Cruces has been incredible. The Aggies must feel like the 800 lb Gorilla in the WAC. It's peculiar that he hasn't jumped ship for more money, not that money is the most important thing, but we all know the current climate of college athletics. I know Washington State wanted to hire him a few years back but honestly, I would rather be a contender in a smaller conference every year than be one of the worst teams in the PAC-12. Plus, Western Washington isn't much more thrilling than Southern New Mexico, presumably.
By the way, sorry for keeping you guys off topic of next years' recruiting class. This is the most I've been able to talk about UTPA/RGV basketball with anybody hah.
