I would normally not get involved with a thread like this but I find some quotes from the UTPA Men's basketball coach Dan Hipsher to be insulting and out of line. Here is the quote: “Somewhere in it, you have to stand up and be a man and do your job.” here is the link to the article so you can judge the context for yourself: www.themonitor.com/sports/utpa_broncs/struggles-continue-for-utpa-men-in-th-straight-loss/article_4ee05650-b336-11e4-9a2e-07b49bf0d3a7.html#user-comment-area
I think the coach should be the one "manning up". Chris King decided to fire a coach that went 16-16, then double the coaching budget, pay the Hipsher family probably a quarter of a million dollars a year and the University accepts the coach telling the papers that his players need to "man up". I don't think the issue is the quality of players. Perhaps Hipsher's aggressive attitude during games is even worse during practice and in the locker room. That certainly would be one reason players aren't producing at the level they are capable of.

James I agree with you man. Coach Hipsher and his staff have to take responsibility, five conference loses by double digits. He has tried to employ a "Bobby knight" style of coaching since day 1, no coaching just going yelling day in day out. Players don't want to play for him or his son. Coach Marks had an impossible job, no conference or post season oppurtunities. He did a fine job and players enjoyed playing for him. The AD proceeds to fire him, saying. "I felt like it was time for new leadership" www.themonitor.com/sports/utpa_broncs/marks-out-at-utpa/article_878dccb2-8ff2-11e2-90b8-0019bb30f31a.html?mode=jqmDoesn't seem like good leadership to me. Maybe the AD wil fire the Hipsher's and bring in another friend from Bama in a few weeks.

The Ad is capable of anything. I remember when he decided to fire both basketball coaches for breakfast one Saturday morning. I've never heard of two coaches being fired on the same day without serious cause. The Womens basketball coach that came in has done a very good job but I'm guessing that person didn't have any previous connection to Chris King. All of Chris King's guys come from the Carolina's or Alabama has he tries to build a staff that is loyal to him above anything. It's a shame because UT-RGV is going to be a great University. I remember King stated that Marks didn't fit the culture, but its become clear that the "culture" means loyal to Chris King. Look what happened to the Men's soccer coach at UTB, Chris King threw the guys career away and now he's unemployable because no other school could possible understand why he was pushed out by King. I don't want to get off topic for this thread because I truly believe the community deserves better than a coach telling the papers that his players need to man up, but I suppose that sort of culture within an athletic department starts with the AD.

Hipsher does seem like a guy that's not very pleasant to deal with. I don't want to come to a conclusion and say he's always yelling at his players since i'm not at the practices. A lot of coaches get heated during games. The thing I like about Hipsher is that he's a good recruiter. It's just the team has been very limited this season. Should be a different story next season. Although looking at the womens team, Tidwell has a totally different personality than Hipsher and it might not be a coincidence that his team is doing a lot better as well. During the coaches shows Jonah is usually joking around with Tidwell but with Hipsher it's always serious. So maybe personality might be a big factor.

Coach Hipsher is quick to bench his players after making mistakes. I think this keeps them from getting into any type of rhythm. Instead of being loose, having fun and scoring points, our guys look scared.
It's funny the Coaches Show was mentioned. I noticed Coach Hipsher had a hard time keeping his head up and really looked uncomfortable looking into the camera this week on the show. Definitely not the Coach I see at the basketball games.
Who's the better recruiter? Is it Coach Dan or Coach Andy? Whoever it is, they are doing a very good job. It's unfortunate Noriega re-injured his foot and Ikuenobe fractured his shin. There is no doubt we would be a better team with those 2 playing. And then there is Rwabigwi who had to sit out this year. Next year we'll have a 7 footer helping out. That will be 4 bigs including Dan Kimasa with a year of D1 experience. Maybe they can find another transfer like Joesaar.
The future looks bright for UTRGV, but you can include me in wishing Coach Hipsher would tone down the "Bobby Knight" style of coaching.

If he's such a good recruiter than the 92% of teams ranked higher must be super duper recruiters.

Speaking of Bob Knight, here he is recommending Coach Hipsher to the Florida-Atlantic AD.

I'm all about results. So far I see less than 20 wins in two years and a coach that is out of line with the at he deals with his players and the press. My opinion, but I believe the results speak for themselves. It was great thought that they picked up a tough win against a decent Seattle team the other day.

As mentioned, I think injuries definitely hurt us this year. Also heard we have another really good transfer sitting out(shoots the lights out). Feel that the future for UTRGV basketball looks bright.

Hipsher hasnt even completed his second year. It's not like we've been a power house to begin with. I'll wait to see with how hipsher does when he gets his 4 full recruiting classes before I say if he needs to go or not.
James- When I mean he's been really good at recruiting im not comparing his recruits to kentucky. With the limited resources he's had to deal with and that utpa isnt really a known brand, I think he's done a pretty good job.

Just to elaborate, I believe we only have one senior(Shaq Boga), and although he is good, everyone else is young and returns.

Coach Hip has done pretty good I think. I have seen coaches come and go for many years. He may not have a fun loving personality, but he has a history of building up programs. He does have a plan and a vision and yes he is strict. I go to the games and he has their full attention, but they don't appear discouraged at all. To the contrary they jump and really listen to him and I am impressed with the players attitudes. They seem to be really trying their best even through all the struggles. I have my ideas and preferences too as a former coach with school kids and from being a true Bronc fan with my brothers since mid-70's, but Coach Hip and the team deserve our support. It is sad that not too many folks at all go to the games especially students. Where are all the Bucky supporters ?? No where to be found at the games. Maybe they hang with him at the ranch or something. Haha... I'm just messing. The girls are doing awesome and they deserve support also. I'm excited for the both basketball programs. I appreciate you guys really. Keep up the passion and lets Go Broncs soon to be Vaqueros !!!

This thread is interesting and I'm glad I found it. I'm surprised there is not more honest dirt on this jerk. I can assure you under any other professional 'field' that such an ASSHOLE abuser would be terminated and not tolerated under any terms whatsoever. This guy is such an egotistical maniac he and others like him should be banned from sports and dealing with the body and minds of players who have given their souls to play collegiate sports. Complete incompetent, ignorant wanker. NEVER in my life have I met an individual so unqualified to be in a coaching position. You have NO IDEA the damage this man has done to prior players. He's an abusive psychotic DICK that needs to be punched in the face by every player he's ever coached. Good to see 'karma' push him out of a head coaching position. I feel for anybody that has to endure his dark cloud of pessimistic wrath.
